The Democracy and Political Violence Collaborative is hosting a mini-conference (a “conference within a conference”) during MPSA’s 2027 annual meeting on Saturday, April 3. This is our second meeting, following our pre-conference at APSA 2026.

What we’re looking for

As always, we invite work — regardless of discipline, subfield, career stage, or approach — that studies democracy and political violence, broadly construed. This includes, but is not limited to, work on:

  • democratic resilience and backsliding
  • support for political violence and antidemocratic policies
  • the effect of violence on political behavior

We welcome submissions of all kinds, including abstracts, research plans, and papers.

Format

The day will feature three paper panels, a roundtable on the state of the field and avenues for future research, and a reception and poster session. The rough schedule:

  1. Coffee hour
  2. Session 1
  3. Session 2
  4. Lunch
  5. Session 3
  6. Roundtable
  7. Reception / poster session

While the conference focuses on accepted papers, attendance and discussion are open with advance registration. Beyond the paper sessions, the day is structured to build an enduring community of researchers in this space, with dedicated time for all attendees — presenters and non-presenters alike — to connect, exchange ideas, and lay the groundwork for future collaboration.

We expect all attendees to read the accepted papers, and accepted authors will also serve as discussants.

How to apply

Use the application form to submit work or to register your interest in attending. The form requires a Google account to upload files.

NoteApplying to MPSA as well?

You can apply to present both at our mini-conference and at MPSA more generally. The two processes are separate: we handle submissions to the mini-conference directly, and general submissions are handled by MPSA.
